OUGD406: Design is About Doing: Secret 7" Research

The Secret 7" allowed you to pick out of seven artists to design a vinyl for:

Laura Marling
Public Enemy
Elton John
Nas
Jessie Ware
Haim
Nick Drake

From listening to each song i picked three artists which i think i could potentially design for:

Laura Marling

Public Enemy

Jessie Ware

I started by looking into the lyrics of each song because i thought that was an appropraite area to start. This would give me an idea of what the song and could also influence the way in which I design the record sleeve.

The lyrics from Laura Marling were very deep, They were about a relationship.
The lyrics in Jessie Wares still love me were also about relationship and love.
The lyrics in Public Enemy's Harder Than You Think were about how they've been in the rap business for a very long time and recent rap artists are losing the soul of hip hop.

I picked Public Enemy to design for, I much preferred the idea and the meaning behind their lyrics.

Here are some previous secret 7 entries which i looked at to get an idea of the standard that I need to be designing at:

I looked at a selection of different old hip hop sleeves to get an understanding and a greater view on the style and design of previous hip hop sleeves and what these designs incorporated.

The vinyls seem to be very roughly thrown together, they feature a lot of photographs of the artists. The only problem is that i cant use the name of the song or the band or images of Public Enemy. I believe i can tackle the task at a totally different angle, maybe focus on Hip Hop as a culture. I think i could possibly add something which involves graffiti or some style of stencil.
